Cancer 101 Session with Promotores de Salud in Liberal, KS
A Cancer 101 training, Aprendámos sobre el Cáncer, was conducted in Spanish with 20 Promotores de Salud at UMMAM Care Center in Liberal, Kansas, on Monday, April 9th, 2012 by Dr. Paula Cupertino and co-facilitator Mercedes Saint-Elin.
The program content was developed by Dr. Paula Cupertino, Juntos Director, and Mercedes Saint-Elin, Research Associate, as part of the pilot research project entitled Latino and American Indian Community Health Workers Promoting Cancer Research Studies of the U54 Kansas Community Cancer Health Disparities Network funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
This highly participatory training is the first session of the Cancer Research Studies training for Promotores de Salud, a community based program created for Latino immigrants. The program contains worksheets, short videos, NCI materials, games, and a personal evaluation of each session. The program is based on Paulo Freire’s Popular Education model in which everyone learns from each other.
Every participant received a folder with education materials including a summary of the session and a glossary of cancer terms from the NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms.
