Guest Speaker: Mayra Alvarez – “The Affordable Care Act and Latinos”
On Wednesday, February 15th, 2012, the Juntos Center for Advancing Latino Health, the KUMC Department of Family Medicine, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-Region VII, hosted a panel discussion on the implications of the Affordable Care Act for Latinos in Kansas and the region. Our keynote speaker was Mayra Alvarez, MHA, Director of Public Health Policy at the Office of Health Reform, US Department of Health and Human Services.
Over 100 guests were in attendance representing community health organizations, safety-net clinics, health research and training institutions, and public health providers. Ms. Alvarez was joined by Mary Lou Jaramillo, Chief Executive Officer of El Centro Inc., and Joshua Freeman, MD, Chair of the KUMC Departement of Family Medicine. Ms. Alvarez also toured Duchesne Clinic and met with Promotoras de Salud at El Centro, Inc.
