JUNTOS welcomes First Lady of Chihuahua
Moving along Juntos Center for Advancing Latino Health’s partnership with Mexico, we welcomed First Lady of Chihuahua, Bertita Gómez de Duarte, and the Director of Seguro Popular of Chihuahua, Pedro Hernández Flores, to Garden City for a two-day visit in the state of Kansas.
On Thursday October 11th, 2012, Paula Cupertino, Arturo Ponce, Mercedes Saint-Elin, and Miriam Munoz from Juntos accompanied First Lady of Chihuahua Mrs. Duarte and Chihuahua officials on a visit to Liberal, Kansas, which included a live, one hour interview at radio La Mexicana, a tour to the National Beef plant, a visit to the Ventanilla de Salud, the UMMAN clinic, and a town hall meeting which was covered by the Latino local media.
More than eighty Mexicans from Chihuahua, Promotores de Salud, and Latino leaders representing Dodge City, Garden City and Liberal gathered at the town hall meeting held at the Liberal Chamber of Commerce to share their experiences and challenges with the U.S. education and health care systems. The town hall meeting was concluded with two children’s dance performances.
Mrs. Duarte, who is also the director of DIF (the State System for Integral Family Development in Chihuahua), answered each of the questions raised by the public concerning health prevention programs as well as new education opportunities in Chihuahua. In addition, Mr. Hernández Flores talked about Seguro Popular, a Mexican health insurance program launched in 2003 that provides a comprehensive package of health services in Mexico to more than 50 million citizens.
Finally, Mrs. Duarte expressed her firm interest in enhancing the collaboration with Juntos and the Ventanilla de Salud program in Southwest Kansas. Our Ventanilla de Salud is the leading agency that promotes the Seguro Popular in Southwest Kansas.
The Lancet recently published an article on Seguro Popular. Citation: Knaul FM, González-Pier E, Gómez-Dantés O, et al. The quest for universal health coverage: achieving social protection for all in Mexico. Lancet 2012; 380:1259-79.
