NFL-ACS A Crucial Catch at Celebrating Healthy Families
On Saturday, October 6th, staff members from Juntos and Healthy Living Kansas, a promotora from El Centro, Fourth-year medical students, and community volunteers provided breast cancer and breast cancer screening education to Latina women as a part of the National Football League-American Cancer Society “A Crucial Catch” initiative. The educational outreach took place at the annual Celebrating Healthy Families health fair which is a partnership of community-based organizations that seeks to bring awareness and access to health care for the uninsured Latino community in the Kansas City metro area. During the educational sessions, women wore breast simulators where they could practice palpation techniquesexperience how breast abnormalities feel. They also interacted with breast models that showed different cancer-related pathologies. Promotoras and staff members from Juntos and Health Living Kansas explained key concepts about cancer and emphasized the importance of early detection through mammograms and clinical exams.
