Juntos, HLK, and El Centro Launch Breast Cancer Awareness Radio Campaign
As part of the National Football League-American Cancer Society “A Crucial Catch” initiative on breast cancer education in Wyandotte County, Juntos and Healthy Living Kansas in collaboration with El Centro Inc. have launched a radio campaign to disseminate breast cancer education among women in our Latino community. The goal of the campaign is to empower women to take an active role in the care of their health; particularly to take actions to decrease their risk of breast cancer, to know their breasts and be aware of signs of breast cancer, and to utilize breast cancer screening tests available in the community in an informed manner.
The radio campaign consists of several PSAs on different topics such as cancer, mammography, false positive, risk factors, and early detection. One of the biggest challenges during the development of the PSAs was to communicate complex medical concepts in simple words that were easy to understand and remember. Fortunately, promotoras from El Centro and women from the community contacted at the Mexican Consulate provided valuable feedback and suggestions for the wording and content of the PSAs resulting in a very creative work that reflects the spirit of the Mexican immigrant community.
We at Juntos and Healthy Living Kansas believe that health education in our Latino community is fundamental to fight current health disparities. Moreover, we think that Latina women will be able to make better health-related decisions if they are well informed. We invite you to listen to our breast cancer awareness campaign on La Super X 1160 AM and to talk with a promotora about any questions regarding breast cancer at 913-945-7879. Remember early detection can save your life. You have the choice.
