A New Year with Ventanillas de Salud

The Ventanillas de Salud cooperative with Juntos, aims to provide Latinos all over the state of Kansas with friendly, comprehensive, bilingual health care access; traveling to more remote, Western Kansas towns with higher populations of Latinos. Liberal and Dodge City for example, have Latino populations of over 50%. Among these health services are blood pressure and blood glucose screenings, application of fluoride to children’s teeth, providing smoking cessation information, and conducting free school physicals.

2014 Internship Opportunities

Juntos Center for Advancing Latino Health offers internships to students looking to pursue a career in public health or medicine. Juntos focuses on health disparities present in the Kansas Latino community.   Interns experience the field of public health by meeting with preventive medicine and public health professors, public health and medical students, and outreach program coordinators. 2012 Binational Health Week in Kansas City, KS

From Oct. 9 to Oct. 12, various community-based organizations, health care providers, and volunteers came together at the Mexican Consulate in Kansas City to promote health education initiatives, provide immunizations and medical screenings to people without medical insurance.  The Secretary of Health and Foreign Affairs of Mexico and the Institute of Mexicans Abroad were some of the main partners for Binational Health Week. Guest Speaker: Mayra Alvarez – “The Affordable Care Act and Latinos”

On Wednesday, February 15th, 2012, the Juntos Center for Advancing Latino Health, the KUMC Department of Family Medicine, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-Region VII, hosted a panel discussion on the implications of the Affordable Care Act for Latinos in Kansas and the region. Our keynote speaker was Mayra Alvarez, MHA, Director of Public Health Policy at the Office of Health Reform, US Department of Health and Human Services.
