Latino Health

Projects

Latino Immigrant Health (LIH)

In collaboration with the parishes of El Buen Pastor, San Pablo and Nuestra Señora de la Unidad, in Shawnee, Olathe and Kansas City, KS respectively, JUNTOS has supported the establishment of parish health groups with the mission of improving the health of Latinos from the parish communities. The leaders of these groups connect their communities to local resources and services. They also learn and disseminate health information on a regular basis between their networks and support health projects for the benefit of their community. For more information you can contact the parish offices or call JUNTOS at 913-945-7869

Food Assistance

In order to improve Latino access to food assistance programs like WIC and SNAP in Wyandotte County, we conducted focus groups and surveys with users of these programs and interviewed people who ran them. We learned about some barriers that block access to these programs, including fear that if using these programs, it will affect the immigration status of families, stereotypes of being an economic “burden” and a lack of bilingual materials and counseling. We are currently working with a group of people in the community to identify potential solutions to these problems.

Find local help.

Taking Down Tobacco (TDT)

Learn about the risks of smoking tobacco and how to promote changes in your school, your city and your state that help prevent more people from falling into addiction. JUNTOS works with local high school students to establish student leadership groups to promote these changes. Among other things, students complete the Taking Down Tobacco national curriculum, give presentations, travel to the state capital, attend conferences, and join the state group RESIST. Take a look at what our Stallions Against Tobacco group at F.L. Schlagle High School is doing. If you are interested in forming or belonging to a group, call or send us a text at 913-229-4406 using WhatsApp or send us an e-mail.

Genetic Testing

Approximately 5-10% of cancers are hereditary. This means that they are caused by a genetic error that is passed on in the family. The good news is that they can be prevented! The first step in prevention is to review your family history of cancer. If it indicates a high risk, the next step is complete a genetic test. If an error is found in your genes, a genetic counselor will explain what your risk is and what actions you can take to decrease it in conjunction with your doctor. The BRCF in collaboration with JUNTOS offers free genetic testing to qualified individuals.

If you are:

Over 18 years old and have had cancer or have a history of cancer in your family, contact us for a cancer evaluation in your family tree at no cost. If your result indicates high risk and you do not have health insurance or your insurance does not cover genetic testing, you may be eligible for genetic testing and counseling.

Write us by e-mail or WhatsApp, call or send us a text at 913-229-4406

ADORE

ADORE is a clinical trial that wants to measure if a higher dosage of DHA can reduce an early preterm birth (before 34 weeks). DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is in many prenatal vitamins and helps with the early development of the baby’s brain, heart, and eyes. Dr. Susan Carlson is the principal investigator for ADORE and the study is being implemented at the University of Kansas Medical Center, the University of Cincinnati, Ohio State University and the National Children’s Hospital. We have completed enrollment in this study and are analyzing the results.

ADORE Focus

This study started shortly after we started enrolling moms in the ADORE study at KUMC. We found out that Latina moms were starting prenatal care later than other moms. In addition, we observed that they often did not have complete information about their pregnancy and were not receiving care in hospital clinics. So we did focus groups with Latina moms and interviews with healthcare providers to understand what was going on and explore ways to solve it.

Decidetext

Do you want to quit smoking? Decidetext is a program specially designed to support Latinos to quit smoking through text messages. Half of the participants receive messages to support them to quit smoking and the other half receive educational materials. Everyone can order replacement nicotine patches or gum at no cost. The program is part of a study to see how effective Decidetext is and more than 600 Latinos in Kansas (in the southwest of the state and the KC metropolitan area) and New York participate. We are currently no longer enrolling participants in Kansas. If you want to quit smoking, go to Quitline for help.

JUNTOS Against Cancer

In collaboration with local organizations and the Biospecimen Core Repository Facility (BCRF), JUNTOS conducted multiple presentations on clinical cancer research at various community locations in Wyandotte County. The presentations covered topics such as the incidence of cancer in Latinos and the role of research to create treatments that work for everyone. They also clarified myths and questions from the community. Finally, we held a biobank event at “La Placita” during the Dotteversity Parade. These efforts and the joint work of the BCRF and The University of Kansas Health System have multiplied the number of Spanish speakers represented in the biobank. See the presentation and results from the presentations.
